Picasa Downloader seems to work, but does not download the full-resolultion, original image size. I am consistently getting images that are only 500x375 px in size.

Also, ASCII format URL Encoding is being made when creating folder and file names. Spaces in the original Picasa images are created as '%20', etc. can this feature be turned off, and the original filder/file name be used if wanted?

I have previously used 'Picasa Web Album Assistant' which is java-based, but the functionality is very limited. That program will, however, return the original image date (not the folder though).

An update couldn't hurt :)

The documentation is in the tooltip of the download button. So well hidden ;-)

I'm not sure picasa turns the orgiginal filename, but i'll have a look at the stuff it returns.

It's time for an update i guess.

Any chance of keeping the original image file date (as uploaded to Picasa)
rather than the date of download?

This would help differentiate between any photo revisions.

Ctrl click the download button? No, I could not find that function in the documentation.

Presumably, if I am using Picasa Downloader, I am *not* downloading my own photos, so by default, why wouldn't I want the biggest, original resolution photos by default?

Hi,

Did you try ctrl-click the download button? This should download the images at original resolution. By default google resizes the images to a max of 1600px.

I'll try to implement the unescaping of filenames as soon as possible (did not encounter it myself yet so did not implement it).

What do you mean with original filename/folder (the unescaped version)?

Loving the program. D/L'ed it just the other day. I wish that I had come here before starting to use it as I have learned a few tips. The best two are adding {Owner} to the d/l path and Ctrl+Download to get original sized images.

Commented Issue: Use user picture folder instead of default location [12725]

The program saves pictures into {WindowsInstallDrive}:\Users\{Username}\My Pictures\PicasaDownloaded. This is not always the default location where user stores their pictures. For example, using Windows 7, I moved all my folders onto another drive, and thus the program saved downloaded images into C:\Users\Rryk\My Pictures\PicasaDownloaded, while I normally store my pictures at D:\Pictures.

This is a minor bug.

This is really minor as anyone can simple move resulting files wherever they want, but this feature feels missing when you first run the app. I don't think that this is too hard - all you need is to place a new input field on the form and read it's value into Form1.DownloadPath.

Current the system automatically places each album in the folder with the name that contains album id and it's title in parenthesis. I would prefer to get rid of id and parenthesis, some others would like to have it even more different. Thus some control would be very helpful here.

I have also been thinking that my naming system may cause a collision. Still having a couple of different options for a user would be helpful. Here are some ideas:

1) Use an index suffix that appears for repeated names, e.g. Vacation, Vacation (2), Vacation (3).
2) Use album creation date and append it as a suffix to album name, e.g. Vacation (12.10.2008 21:03), Vacation (17.06.2009 17:44), Trip to Germany (09.09.2010 02:34).
3) Use album identifier, but switch places with album name, e.g. Vacation (239845238746523), Vacation (8943234523452345), Trip to Germany (3452299854557).

The basic motivation here is that non-tech people hate to see such internals as album identifier in folder names, especially on the first place. They would like to see something they understand, e.g. album title and/or date.

Please write a short tutorial that explain how to set up development environment in order to first build the project. In particular I'd love to see the documentation on which dependencies are in the project, where should they be placed and referenced. This tutorial should be also understandable for newbies who know programming and Visual Studio, but are not very familiar with C#.

I have tried setting up dependencies here and there, downloaded Swiss library, Newtonsoft.Json library, played with references but still failed to build it. One of the reasons could be that I am not very familiar with dependency system for C#, but I think it should be more intuitive. I am not asking you to write a book on dependencies in C# (I believe there are plenty online), but something like a list of step-by-step instructions can be very helpful for those who are willing to contribute. Problems building the project frustrates people who are willing to contribute and drives them off. I also understand that this is boring work, but it may help you getting more people working for you. However, if you are planning to keep developing the projects yourself only, then writing such a tutorial may be useless. Finally, it all depends on your interest in developing this project and available free time :)

It would be nice to save picture title from Picasa Web Albums as image metadata. The required title shouldn't be too hard to extract (just read appropriate field in the JObject) and to save (use Bitmap::SetPropertyItem). I could have created a patch for that myself, but as I am no expert in C# development and wasn't able to get the source compiled due to a few missing dependencies required to build it (Swiss, Newtonsoft.Json).

Basically I have used your app to download albums from Picasa Web Albums and to upload them to Facebook. To be able to preserve titles of the pictures, however, they must be stored somewhere, where an application that will upload them to Facebook could reach them. My first thought was that the best location for title is metadata. However, as I have found out after your comment, Picasa Web Albums does preserve all original attributes of the image and I can see your point to keep them intact. Therefore a better solution would be to store titles in a separate hidden file, that will map image titles in the current folder to their titles as presented in Picasa Web Albums. Then other apps will be able to read them and use whenever needed. Additionally to title one can store comments, location and any other image attributes. As for the format of such file I recommend using XML, as it's extensible and parsers are available for many languages.
